🎓 Graduation & job applications: when should you start?

You’re knee-deep in your thesis. Coffee mug number four is in your hand, your inbox is exploding, and your laptop sounds like it’s ready for takeoff.
Then a classmate casually drops: “I’ve got a job interview next week.”

Panic mode? Maybe. Or... not?

A lot of students wonder: When should you actually start applying for jobs while you’re still graduating?
Too early feels awkward. Too late is... well, too late.

Start about 3 to 4 months before graduation

According to multiple career coaches, it’s smart to start applying three to four months before your expected graduation date. That means checking vacancies, updating your resume and maybe sending out a few applications already.

Why? Because application processes take time. Think of interviews, assessments, feedback rounds and don’t forget about holidays. If you start now, you won’t be stuck post-graduation refreshing Indeed in your pyjamas.

What about timing throughout the year?

It’s often said that February through May are great months to apply. Many companies finalize their hiring plans for the second half of the year around that time. We’ve definitely noticed this at JUSTIN too.

⚠️ But fair warning: this isn’t a hard rule. Some sectors, like healthcare, education or retail, recruit year-round or peak later in the year.
So take it as a chance, not a guarantee. What matters most is when you are ready to move.

Applying before graduation? Absolutely.

If you already know you’ll finish in July or August, just mention that in your application. For example: “I expect to graduate by the end of June and will be available full time from July 1st.”
Employers appreciate clarity. It shows you plan ahead and take this seriously. Chances are they’ll either schedule you in or keep you on their radar.

4 Tips for successful job hunting while you’re still studying

  1. Ask your internship supervisor
Is there a job or traineeship opportunity? If you’re enjoying your time there, it’s the first place to check.

  2. Update your resume
Add your thesis topic and the skills you’re building right now.

  3. Grow your network
Talk to alumni, recruiters, or your thesis advisor. Let people know you’re looking!

  4. Be upfront
Clearly communicate your availability (and keep in touch if things shift).

Bottom line: applying while graduating is a smart move

Don’t wait until you’ve fully graduated but start 3 to 4 months in advance. That gives you the breathing room to explore, have interviews, and land your first real match. Especially in sectors where timing is key, that early start can make all the difference.
