Rejected? Why that “no” might be the best career advice you'll get

A rejection after a job application never feels great. Whether it’s after the first interview or at the end of a full hiring process: the moment you read “unfortunately,” your motivation tends to drop just as fast as your hopes. But what if that rejection is actually the start of something better?

Rejection = feedback, even if no official reason is given

Not all companies provide a clear reason for turning down a candidate. But that doesn’t mean you can’t learn from it. By reflecting on your interview or application, you’ll often spot something you can tweak, something that’ll help you come back stronger next time.

And sometimes, it’s not about your experience or skills at all. It’s simply the match. Maybe another candidate had a slightly better fit or had previously worked at the company. It happens and it’s not about you.

What you can do after a rejection

  • Ask for feedback
A lot of candidates hesitate, but it’s a smart move. A short message like:
"Thanks for your response. Do you have any feedback or suggestions I can take into my next application?", often gives you valuable insight.

  • Reflect on your preparation
Did you clearly communicate your strengths? Was your story relevant? Did you do your research on the company and role? Even without a specific rejection reason, you can learn a lot.

  • Use your insights in your next application
Apply what you’ve learned to your CV, your pitch, or your motivation letter. Sometimes, one rejection helps sharpen your entire profile.

  • Know the difference between ‘not a match’ and ‘not good enough’
Rejection can feel personal, but often it’s not. Maybe the team needed a different skillset or energy. That doesn’t reflect on your talent or potential.

  • Be honest with yourself: did you really want this role?
Disappointed, but also slightly relieved? That says something. Rejection can be a chance to check if the job was actually right for you or just something you thought you wanted.

  • Grow your network, even after a no
good conversation, even if it didn’t lead to a job? Ask to stay in touch. Recruiters and hiring managers often remember you when something else opens up.

  • Write your own reflection
What went well? What would you do differently? Writing it down turns a disappointment into a learning moment and a foundation for growth.

JUSTIN’s got your back, even when it stings a little
